Strange and beautiful

I have no idea what type of wildflower these are but I thought they were strange and beautiful. I spotted them on my street yesterday when the afternoon light was just right. Pin It

That's Red Spider Lily (Lycoris radiata). It's a bulb native to Japan, but has naturalized in the South. It's also called Hurricane Lily and Schoolhouse Lily for the time of year it blooms.

What's really wonderful about it is that it has no leaves (which gives it another name, Naked Lady), so it seems to pop out of existing planting or lawn like an early autumn firecracker. The redish color really stands out from the green.

I'm Rebecca's brother by the way. And a confessed plant geek if you hadn't noticed already!
